Coffee Sugar Scrub (DIY)
Updated: Oct 21, 2020
Lately I’ve really been on a sugar scrub kick - what's not to love about feeling super soft and smooth after gentle exfoliation? Don't even get me started on the ah-mazing benefits of essential oil fragrances. Anyways, the downside to my body scrub addiction is that it can get a *bit* pricey, especially when searching for natural ingredients and since we're on a tight budget, I started searching for cheaper/healthier alternatives.
With the help of my favorite addictive app (Pinterest) I found that sugar scrub recipes can be really easy and cheap to make - so here is a super simple scrub using only 3 ingredients! I saved my used coffee grounds in a container for about 2 weeks and used organic unrefined coconut oil that I splurged on, along with brown sugar which I already had in my pantry. It's easy to mix the ingredients together and it smells fabulous. I put the scrub in a jar with a sealed lid, awaiting shower time.
**Helpful tip: since you’ll basically be making coffee in your shower, I would definitely recommend buying a drain stopper/hair catcher to keep all the coffee grounds from clogging up your tub. If you have a lot of faith in your drain system, then you’re one of the lucky few and you may skip this step!**
After getting in the shower, I washed my hair first and then clipped it up to avoid needing a second wash. To use the scrub, I just scooped up a handful from the jar and started scrubbing my body everywhere. At first it seemed a little weird, because coffee is for drinking with desperation on Monday mornings, not for using in the shower right? Wrong. The coconut oil is great for your skin and combined with the coffee ground exfoliant, I felt amazingly silky and soft afterwards! I generally use the scrub once or twice a week for soft skin and café fragrance.
DIY COFFEE SUGAR SCRUB RECIPE
1/4 cup coconut oil (room temp or softened)
1/4 cup coffee grounds
1/4 cup brown sugar
In a small bowl, combine all ingredients and mix well.
If you love sugar scrub as much as I do and are searching for a cheaper way to make it at home with ingredients you probably already have, I recommend trying out this recipe! I used brown sugar which gives the scrub a bit of bolder scent, but you can use regular granulated sugar if that's what you have on hand. I also saved my used coffee grounds for this recipe as a little bit of an "upcycle" but you can use fresh grounds if you prefer. Don't forget to comment and let me know if you have any of your own diy sugar scrub recipes!
